PTNY’s Cycling the Hudson and Champlain Valleys book (link) is excellent if you plan to cycle any part (or all) of the North-South route of the Empire State Trail. The book offers maps of all the sections of the trails which give a great idea of where you will be cycling. Each section shows places to visit along the way to allow you to not only enjoy the cycling but also enjoy the other attractions of the area. Detailing the types of surfaces you will encounter, both on and off road, allows you to make sure your bicycle is the right type and properly equipped for the adventure. For multi-day adventures, the guide offers hotels, campgrounds and breweries as well as bicycle shops if you need any supplies or help along your trip. It lays out many points of interest: Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park (who knew!), to the beautiful Bronx Botanical Gardens just a short distance off the trail to Champlain Canal Lock 9 in Fort Ann, where you can you eat your packed lunch and enjoy the view. Used with the Empire State Trail website, this book is a great way to get you started on your next cycling adventure.
